Dear members and prospective members:
The 2009 golf season was beyond our expectations and was full of birdies, pars and great fellowship. Winter is nearing an end and we look forward to the start of the 2010 season. We are confident that it will be an extraordinary season for you at the Highlands. Several new golf members have joined our family of Highland’s members. We are looking forward to meeting them on and off the golf course and are pleased that they have chosen to play one of the best golf courses in West Michigan.
The Highlands is truly one of the best values in the Grand Rapids area. It is also one of the very best golf courses and our staff is very proud to offer exceptional service to our members. We will continue to strive for excellence and are grateful to all of the members who have commented so favorably about our staff.
The Highlands Golf Club had a very successful year in 2009 and we were able to make many improvements and investments to make the Highlands even better for you.
- The well and pump station near hole #6 tee was completely replaced. This was a very large investment, but is vital to the future irrigation needs of the golf course. The other well and pump station near the maintenance building, was constructed in the 1950’s. It too was in tremendous need of repair or replacing. It was no longer able to supply enough water pressure to allow for upgrades to the irrigation system. A decision was made to switch the entire irrigation system to hole #6 as the main source of water. With the new system in place, we have established the groundwork for a more modernized irrigation system to be added in the future.
- As many of you know, the maintenance equipment was also aging and improvements needed to be made in order to continue to maintain the golf course in optimal playing conditions now and into the future. A new rough mower and greens roller was purchased in 2009. In 2008 a new greens mower and rough mower were purchased. This new rough mower can mow easier around greens and bunkers, particularly on slopes.
- The fairway mowing patterns of the past few years were changed and the fairways were cut back to their original areas. This added from 20-40 yards of fairway to most par 4’s and par 5’s. Improvements have also been made to the practice area. The range netting was replaced and another section was added. This has helped to keep more golf balls away from the 17th fairway. Our hope in 2010 is to improve the short game area of the practice range.
- In 2009 the Highlands hired a new superintendent, Carl Metzner. He has done a fantastic job and has maintained the golf course to superior levels. Carl and I both have the same philosophy - The Highlands is a great golf course that needs to be maintained to the highest standards possible. Carl is the right man for the job and he looks forward to the 2010 season.
We have added hundreds of dollars in more value to your 2010 golf membership!
Enclosed with this letter is membership information for 2010. As you will see, we have named the two membership types: the Donald Ross membership and the Al Watrous membership. What better names could be used than to honor the very famous golf course architect and the golf professional from the Highlands who went on to much success as a PGA Tour player. The fees are the same as they were in 2009, but the benefits and value have increased.
- You can take advantage of the early payment program and receive your locker and range membership free. There is also a great cash incentive for referring new members. Donald Ross members also receive numerous benefits that add significant value to your membership. Please review the benefits on page three of the membership packet. If you use the benefits and value added items, and place a dollar amount to the items, you will find that you will realize many hundreds of dollars and potentially even more value to your membership investment.
- New for 2010 will be an E-newsletter to members. There will also be a member’s only section of the www.highlandsgr.com <http://www.highlandsgr.com> website where discount and free items will be posted for members only. Tees will again be free to members and towel service will again be no charge for full members or those members who use bag storage. Please also take advantage of the free golf for your grandchildren and the free passes and discount green fees for your guests.
- The Highlands staff will continue to be cognizant of the need to offer significant playing times for our members. We have restricted golf leagues to a schedule similar to 2009. Standing and advanced tee times will again be encouraged in 2010.
Let’s all grow the Highlands membership. Take advantage of the referral incentives. Introduce a friend or co-worker to the Highlands. A check with your name on it could be waiting for you!
Have a great rest of the golf season and I look forward to very short winter and early spring.
